Hemosiderin is a complex of iron and protein that forms when there is an excess of iron in the body. It is commonly stored in tissues and cells, particularly in the liver, spleen, and bone marrow, as a result of the breakdown of red blood cells. When hemolysis (destruction of red blood cells) occurs, hemosiderin can be released into the bloodstream and eventually excreted in the urine.
