Fungi can infect the nails (both fingernails and toenails), causing them to become discolored, thickened, brittle, and sometimes painful. These infections are typically caused by dermatophytes, but yeasts and molds can also be involved. Toenail infections are more common than fingernail infections due to the environment inside shoes, which is warm and moist, ideal for fungal growth.
