The indirect bilirubin test measures the level of unconjugated bilirubin in the blood. Unconjugated bilirubin is the form of bilirubin that has not yet been processed by the liver. It is produced when hemoglobin from red blood cells is broken down, and it circulates in the bloodstream before being transported to the liver for processing into conjugated bilirubin.
