The bile salt test measures the levels of bile salts in the blood or urine. Bile salts are critical for digesting fats and absorbing fat-soluble vitamins in the small intestine. They are produced by the liver from cholesterol, stored in the gallbladder, and released into the intestines to help emulsify fats.
