Bronchial washing is a diagnostic procedure performed during bronchoscopy to collect lower respiratory tract secretions. It is particularly useful in cases where tuberculosis (TB) or non-tuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infections are suspected but sputum samples are inconclusive. The collected fluid is tested for Acid-Fast Bacilli (AFB) using culture and sensitivity (C/S) to confirm Mycobacterium tuberculosis or other atypical mycobacterial infections.
